When I reflect on Andersen’s time-honored mantra “Think Straight, Talk Straight”, I often think of Rotary’s Four Way test… Like Andersen, Rotary was born in Chicago, Illinois but in 1905, some eight years before Andersen. Rotary first began as a business networking organization and has evolved into one of the largest service organizations in the world. It is a non-political and non-religious organization with a stated mission to "provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through [the] fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders". I am proud to say I am a Rotarian, just like my father and my mentor at Andersen. Borrowing from Rotary’s playbook, I wanted to share Rotary’s Four Way Test with you.

Of the things we think, say, or do:

1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

You don’t have to be a Rotarian to apply the four-way test. For all the noise in the world today--with everyone trying to speak louder than the next person--I'd like to believe that if more of us applied Rotary's simple test, how much better off our world would be.
